About this event

Join Odawa Anishinaabe writer Sierra Biidaaban Nadeau, author of the new book What the Ancestors Say , for an evening of storytelling, conversation, and celebration. An award-winning journalist, Sierra will reflect on how her reporting on Michigan's Indian boarding schools grew into a sweeping journey through her own family's history, the memories of survivors, and intergenerational Native resilience. She will be in conversation with Heather Bruegl, local historian, activist, and decolonial education consultant. Sierra Biidaaban Nadeau is an award-winning Odawa Anishinaabe storyteller from Traverse City, Michigan. In 2020, she started a fellowship with the Mishigamiing Journalism Project, a partnership between the Traverse City Record-Eagle and Indigenizing the News. In 2021, she received a fellowship with Report for America and became the Record-Eagle's first full-time Native American reporter and the state's only full-time Indigenous affairs reporter. She currently works as the reporting specialist for Miigwech, Inc., and also works as a freelance writer and keynote speaker. Heather Bruegl, inspired by a trip to Wounded Knee, South Dakota, quickly developed a passion for Native American History. Curiosity for her own heritage led her to Wisconsin, where she has researched the history of the Native American tribes of that region. Heather is a graduate of Madonna University of Michigan and holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in U.S. History. She currently travels and lectures on Native American history, including policy and activism. This event includes a signing with books for sale. The Library intends to provide a live stream of this event pending the presenter's permission. Please check back closer to the event for additional updates. L
