- ➤ Chengxuan Han, a Chinese national and U-M lab worker, pleaded no contest to smuggling round worms and other biological materials into the US on three occasions — she admitted to making false statements during a border inspection and will face sentencing on September 10 with a risk of up to 25 years in prison. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Ypsilanti’s new Puentes Multilingual School opened Monday, Aug. 18, with Principal Celeste Henderson Green welcoming students and community members at a festive celebration — district officials said enrollment remains open for families interested in joining the program. MLive
- ➤ Michigan’s top 50 high schools for 2025-26 were ranked by U.S. News with four schools earning top-100 spots, and Washtenaw International High School—located in Ypsilanti—appeared on the list. The rankings, released on August 19, measured test scores, graduation rates, and advanced coursework. MLive
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Competing plans in Michigan are aiming to change property taxes; one proposal will reform the system while another seeks to eliminate them entirely. Karla Wagner will collect 600,000 signatures this summer for a 2026 ballot initiative—state House Speaker Matt Hall supports only a reduction to keep funding for schools and local governments. FOX 2
- ➤ University of Michigan officials reentered negotiations to select a new site for its planned computing center with Los Alamos—township officials advocated for the former GM site near Willow Run Airport rather than the initially proposed location on Textile Road across from the Ford Rawsonville Plant.
