COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Wasem Fruit Farm in Augusta Township is the only local farm offering a self pick cherry season with Montmorency cherries sold at $3.50 per pound with a 5 pound minimum purchase — the season began July 3 and will last about two weeks. The family run farm has operated for 50 years and is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day except Monday and Wednesday.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • A jury began deliberations at 4:10 p.m. Thursday, July 10th on the trial of 25-year-old Shonquez Monteneke Billy Lawson for fatally shooting another man last year, and a verdict will be announced soon.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lincoln Consolidated Schools will interview six candidates next week to choose a new superintendent after Bob Jansen left the job at the end of the 2024-25 school year. Some applicants are education professionals from southeastern Michigan (including a few from Washtenaw County).  MLive
  • The University of Michigan board of regents announced on Thursday, July 10 that it hired global leadership firm Spencer Stuart to lead the search for a new president after former president Santa Ono resigned this spring — beginning the process to name his replacement.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Ypsilanti City Council launched a Youth Mini Grant program and set aside $10,000 for nonprofit organizations that serve city youth ages fourteen to twenty-four—applications are accepted from July 1 until September 30.  City of Ypsilanti
  • The City of Ypsilanti finished a resurvey of its local historic district and will hold a public meeting on July 23 at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall (1 S Huron Street) to review the survey findings and recommendations.
