CRIME NEWS

  • All charges against University of Michigan student Sammie Lewis were dropped Tuesday after the Attorney General filed a motion to nolle prosequi for his arrest during a nonviolent protest at Festifall last spring+ protesters had set up camp calling for the school to divest from Israeli-linked interests.  FOX 2
  • The Michigan Department of Transportation warned that a toll road scam used a fake michigan.gov link and an image similar to its website to send text messages demanding toll payments; the department said it did not run toll roads and urged residents to delete suspicious texts and contact their bank if payment details were shared — consumers should also report these messages to SPAM 7726.  FOX 2
  • Lewis Junior Smith, a 41-year-old convicted sex offender from Ypsilanti, pleaded no contest on April 28 to felony first-degree criminal sexual conduct for a 2018 assault where DNA testing linked him to his victim—Washtenaw County officials say he will be sentenced on June 9 and he was already convicted for a 2015 assault.  MLive
