CRIME NEWS

  • Deputies responded to a family dispute on the 100 block of N. Hewitt Road in Ypsilanti Township around midnight May 8 & confirmed that a man died and another was taken into custody after a gun was reportedly used.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Michigan lawmakers are debating two proposals to limit student cell phone use in schools and to set rules that restrict use during class periods, recess, lunch, and in between classes. The Senate passed a bill on May 7 by a vote of 28 to 9 (providing exceptions for emergencies and medical needs) while the House plan does not, and a final law will be decided in the future.  FOX 2
  • Domenico Grasso, chancellor at University of Michigan—Dearborn, was named interim president by the Board of Regents on May 8 in a closed meeting. He led growth in enrollment and campus improvements and his appointment comes as Santa Ono departs for the University of Florida this summer.  MLive
  • Santa Ono said on May 4 that he will leave the University of Michigan to become president of the University of Florida later this summer and explained his choice in a letter that focused on merit and safe campus rules—UM will name Domenico Grasso as interim president after a Board of Regents vote on May 15.  MLive
