COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City has partnered with the Washtenaw County Conservation District to give away 200 free tree seedlings for Arbor Day, and residents may choose from Hackberry, Bur Oak, or Red Pine. The giveaway provides clear guidelines to plant each tree at least 3 feet from pavements, 15 feet from buildings, and 25 feet from overhead wires — ensuring safe placement on private property.  City of Ypsilanti

CRIME NEWS

  • Deshawn Dante Leeth — a 30-year-old Ypsilanti advocate for at-risk youth — was fatally shot by Pennsylvania State Police on Friday, April 4 after crashing a stolen patrol car on the Pennsylvania turnpike following a chase from Ohio.  MLive

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan DNR reported that about 2,000 bears now live in the Lower Peninsula with 303 complaints in 2024—residents are advised to secure food sources and remove attractants to prevent bears from becoming a problem. DNR biologists caution that feeding bears can lead to them being trapped or euthanized.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan Court of Appeals upheld a ruling against 26 neighbors who challenged the location of a suicide prevention center by Ann Arbor nonprofit Garrett’s Space. The center will break ground April 24 on a 76-acre wooded property at 3900 N. Dixboro Road in Superior Township (township leaders approved the project in October).  MLive
