ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A house fire on the 400 block of east Cross Street in Ypsilanti critically injured one resident with burn injuries when crews arrived shortly before 9 a.m. March 27—he credited a bystander with alerting him and helping his safe escape.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • Attorney Marko Low filed a lawsuit against former University of Michigan quarterback coach Matt Weiss, the University and Keffer Development Services—alleging that Weiss hacked female athletes' accounts to download private photos and videos over several years.  FOX 2

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Michigan announced it will close its Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, shutter its Office for Health Equity and Inclusion, and end its DEI 2.0 Strategic Plan—effective immediately—to focus on student programs such as financial aid, mental health support, and career guidance. University leaders said the decision comes after concerns over resource imbalances and federal threats to diversity funding.  MLive
  • The University of Michigan curtailed its diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives—ending a commitment that had been in place for a decade since the 2016 DEI strategic plan. The decision marked a sharp turn in the campus approach to diversity.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City of Ypsilanti officials said on March 24 that management of Arbor One and Arbor West spread social media messages claiming that their filed appeals had stayed the city condemnations; the city said this claim is false. Officials explained that six buildings remain red tagged due to health and safety risks—such as leaking sewage pipes and inoperable heating—and legal actions are in progress while tenants are advised to seek legal help.  City of Ypsilanti

HEALTH NEWS

  • Yesterday, the federal health department announced it will cut about 10,000 jobs—3,500 at the FDA, 2,400 at the CDC, and 1,200 at the NIH—to save $1.8 billion a year. The job cuts may reduce federal funding for local addiction treatment and recovery services that many Michigan programs rely on.  FOX 2
