EDUCATION NEWS

  • Michigan Youth Challenge Academy is accepting applications for a free program that helps at-risk teens aged 15 ½ to 18 earn their high school diploma or GED and learn job skills— the program will start a cycle on July 13 with a 5 ½-month residential phase and a year of support. Information sessions are scheduled — including Detroit on April 2 and Ypsilanti on April 16.  FOX 2

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A judge delayed approval of a $55M settlement for more than 23,000 residents who were wrongly asked to repay pandemic funds—each is set to receive about $1,400. The final hearing to approve the settlement will be held on April 24th at 1 p.m. in Lansing, where claimants may join virtually or in person.  FOX 2
  • City leaders approved a $41,000 study to check if the deteriorating Prospect Road bridge—two lanes of which have been closed since September—is feasible to replace; the study will estimate repair costs and design changes to support a request for additional funding.  MLive
  • A roundabout will be built next year at the Whittaker Road and Martz Road intersection—just north of the Lincoln Consolidated Schools campus. The three-legged, single-lane design is funded with $1.2 million from the Michigan Department of Transportation and will be the third roundabout along Whittaker Road.  MLive
  • Michigan will update its car seat laws on April 2 so that children must remain in both rear facing and forward facing seats for one extra year before moving to the next type—parents should check seat maker limits and new guidelines that also call for children 4 and under to ride in the back when possible.  FOX 2

HEALTH NEWS

  • Yesterday the Leapfrog Group report found 16 Michigan hospitals had high C-section rates for low risk first time mothers with only 25% meeting the 23.6% benchmark+ hospitals such as MyMichigan Medical Center in Alma reported rates as high as 39.7%, showing a need for improved maternity care.  MLive
