- ➤ Rising homelessness is filling Washtenaw County shelters—families now sleep in halls while officials in Ypsilanti consider buying a hotel to offer permanent housing. Proposed federal cuts are putting food programs and university research at risk as residents also admired a rare rusty blood moon this week. MLive
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Detectives executed search warrants on Thursday in Canton, Van Buren Township and Ypsilanti and seized over 800 grams of cocaine, 2 ounces of crack, heroin, three handguns—one stolen—and a drug press, along with $3,800 intended for forfeiture while arresting a suspect on federal probation as the investigation continues. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Ypsilanti District Library branch on Michigan Avenue has been completely renovated after severe flood damage in 2023. Library officials say the new design features modern lighting, an open layout, study areas and preserved historic elements (built in 1914) with a bronze casting discovered (March 1917), and it will reopen once the unfinished vestibule meets city code. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Michigan DNR said it will gas Canada geese on sites with serious human-goose conflicts — the dead birds will be taken to a landfill. The agency is planning a program to process the meat safely and advises that non-lethal methods be tried first at qualifying locations. FOX 2
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Washtenaw County will close the Pontiac Trail bridge at M-14 and U.S. 23 on Saturday, March 15, with the bridge set to reopen in June — drivers should also expect the eastbound M-14 ramp and nearby roads to have lane closures during road work. MLive
- ➤ State police and other agencies are training in a drill for a nuclear power plant accident that started on March 14 and will run until March 21—Cobalt Magnet 2025 will test emergency response. More than 70 agencies and over 3,000 workers will practice in exercises in Lansing and Southeast Michigan—officials say the drill aims to improve readiness for a potential radiological incident.
