- ➤ Farming leader Melvin Parson — founder of We The People Opportunity Farm — died March 5 at age 61. Community leaders praised his warm smile and commitment to uniting residents by offering work and support to formerly incarcerated people. MLive
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Dr. Sanjay Gupta (CNN chief medical correspondent and UM alumnus) will speak at the Medical School commencement at Hill Auditorium on May 15 from 3 to 5 p.m. He is a practicing neurosurgeon with multiple honorary degrees. MLive
- ➤ The University of Michigan debate team won the ADA National Championship when Eleanor Barrett and Cyrus Esmailzadeh defeated Georgetown 3-0 in a tournament held Mar. 7–9 at Emory University (established in 1903). The team will next compete at the National Debate Tournament from Mar. 26–30 in Houston. MLive
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ County health officials reported that an unvaccinated adult contracted measles likely while in Florida and identified seven public exposure sites in Ypsilanti and Canton from March 4-8; anyone who visited these locations should monitor for symptoms for 21 days and contact their health care provider if symptoms occur. REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ The Azok Group is proposing a new 100-room extended stay hotel by Hilton on two acres at Glencoe Crossing on Washtenaw Ave in Pittsfield Township. The planning commission postponed its vote on March 5 to allow time for a zoning variance and final details. MLive
